Java Gerald "Jake" Westerfield, a beloved father, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, at his home in Beaver Dam, Kentucky. Born on November 7, 1936, in Hartford, Kentucky, Jake was a cherished son of the late Cecil Wilberry Westerfield and the late Lora V. Hoover Westerfield. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara Elizabeth Westerfield, who passed away on February 3, 2003.
Jake dedicated a significant portion of his life as a heavy equipment operator in the Peabody Coal Mine, where he was respected for his hard work and dedication. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from April 28, 1955, until his discharge on February 3, 1959, achieving the rank of Airman First Class. His commitment to his country was a testament to his character and values.
He leaves behind his four sons, Brett, Derek, and Javie Westerfield, Randy Mannikko, and two daughters, Sandy and Wendy Mannikko. Jake's family was the center of his world, and he is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, who brought him much joy and pride. Besides his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Ann Walker Westerfield, and his siblings J.D. Westerfield, Winnie Ellis, Hap Westerfield, Bill Westerfield, Wanda Bristow, and Opal Abel.
To celebrate Jake's life and honor his memory, a public viewing will be held at Hartford Funeral Home on May 22, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who touched so many lives. A funeral service will take place on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 4:30 PM at Hartford Funeral Home, where those who knew and loved him will come together to reflect on his remarkable life.
